MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
Dear CBAJ Family,
On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a restful and meaningful Shabbat.
On this final Shabbat before the US presidential election this Tuesday, November 5, I would like to encourage you to vote. Voting is a right, privilege, and the best way for us to demonstrate our commitment to US democracy and to have our voices heard.
Even in a state like New York, in a district like the one many of us live in where most results are probably a foregone conclusion, the numbers matter and local elections can be decided by slim margins.
Additionally, I would like to encourage you to remember that even if it is important to vote and passionately argue for the candidates, policies, points of view we support, we must also remember to have respect for Americans and members of the Jewish community, broadly and locally, even when they may have different views on the election. I believe that our shared commitments and identities as Americans and Jews must transcend the policies and politicians that we support.
Additionally, I am proud to share two initiatives CBAJ is undertaking that I would like to request your assistance with to support Israelis currently experiencing the challenges of war:
1. Skin Cream for Chayalim. In partnership with former Israeli shaliach to Albany, Yael Reshef, CBAJ will be sending 400 tubes of Aquaphor to soldiers serving on the frontlines, many of whom are experiencing extremely dry and cracked skin. If you are interested in supporting this initiative, please donate to the CBAJ Rabbi's discretionary fund, and put "Skin Cream for Chayalim" in the notes.
2. Partnership with EPIC Family. CBAJ is proud to partner with Epic Family, an organization that provides support and counseling to children living in Israel. Epic Family has seen a tremendous uptick in need in the past year since October 7 due to the war. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support care for one child for one year, or recruit 20 people to give $25 per month for 1 year. Click here to view the flyer or visit EPIC Family's websiteto learn more. As part of this initiative, we are excited to welcome Rabbi Shlomo Pinkus, global director of EPIC family, to speak at CBAJ on Sunday, November 10, about the situation in Israel and EPIC Family's work. Details to follow.
Finally, I will be on vacation this week, leaving on Wednesday and returning on Sunday. I look forward to seeing you when I return.
I hope to see you soon at a tefilah, shiur, or other event!
Am Yisrael Chai.
Shabbat Shalom & Chodesh Tov, Rabbi Ben Kean
