On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a meaningful and restful Shabbat.
I am glad to be back in shul following a restful vacation. While I was away, our country celebrated July 4th, U.S. Independence Day. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to note my gratitude for having been born in a prosperous nation that has, by and large, been a haven for Jews for escaping persecution that has allowed us to flourish.
It is true that many of us may be critical of various aspects of U.S. society or actions taken by our government - historic or present (which we should absolutely express!). Many of us also may have experienced anti-Semitism or have family who have.
That being said, I nonetheless believe that it is important for us to be grateful for this country, the blessings of democracy, and the ability to live freely as Jews with full rights of citizenship - blessings that were unheard of for many of our ancestors.
I hope to see you soon at tefilah, a youth program, or a social event!
