This week, I am reflecting on the power of Kevurat Yisrael, Jewish burial. In particular, I am extremely impressed and proud that this week, the CBAJ community came together to provide a minyan for the burial of Martin Madison, z''l, a Jewish man who lived in a group home and left behind a small family. In particular, I want to publicly acknowledge Rabbi Bomzer and Barry Siegel, who were indispensable in supporting me to prepare and run the funeral, as well as all those who came to be a part of the minyan. These efforts meant a tremendous deal to the family, who were clearly deeply moved by the funeral.
Today is Rosh Chodesh Av, so please be sure to review the rules for the Nine Days! As always, I am always happy to answer any questions.
I hope to see you soon at tefilah, a youth program, or a social event!
Thank you to everyone who came to hear our guest speaker, David Selis, deliver an enlightening talk on coping with destruction in the Book of Eichah (Lamentations). The recording is available to all.

The fast of Shiva Asar B'Tammuz is observed this Sunday, which commences the period known as "Bein HaMetzarim" (lit. "between the straights"), culminating with Tisha B'Av. During this time, we should look for ways to mourn, commemorate, and connect to the losses and suffering of our ancestors throughout history - especially the loss of the Beit HaMikdash. This time also affords us an opportunity to heal and fix the faults of the past and aspire to a more perfect world with a restored Beit HaMikdash.
We also ought to recognize during this time the blessing that is the State of Israel, through which so many of the blessings and prophesies of healing and redemption are fulfilled. May we merit to see (and help bring to fruition) the complete redemption soon.

On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a meaningful and restful Shabbat.
I am glad to be back in shul following a restful vacation. While I was away, our country celebrated July 4th, U.S. Independence Day. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to note my gratitude for having been born in a prosperous nation that has, by and large, been a haven for Jews for escaping persecution that has allowed us to flourish.
It is true that many of us may be critical of various aspects of U.S. society or actions taken by our government - historic or present (which we should absolutely express!). Many of us also may have experienced anti-Semitism or have family who have.
That being said, I nonetheless believe that it is important for us to be grateful for this country, the blessings of democracy, and the ability to live freely as Jews with full rights of citizenship - blessings that were unheard of for many of our ancestors.
I hope to see you soon at tefilah, a youth program, or a social event!

On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a meaningful and restful Shabbat.
I hope to see you soon at tefilah, a youth program, or a social event.
I would like to share a brief thought from a verse in this week's parsha, Vayikra 22:32, "And you shall not profane My holy name, that I may be sanctified among the children of Israel--I am the Lord who sanctifies you."
We learn many core concepts in Halacha from this verse: the obligation Kiddush HaShem, to sanctify G-d's name; choosing martyrdom over violation of the three most severe sins in Torah; maintaining proper, ethical behavior to testify that the Torah we have teaches us these beliefs; and, finally, the idea that certain prayers, "devarim shebikedusha" (i.e. Kedusha, Kaddish), require a minyan (10 adult, Jewish men) to be recited.
Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (known by the acronym the "Netziv") notes that this mandate immediately precedes the Torah's listing of the Mo'adim, the Festivals. He argues this gives us an insight into the nature of the obligation of Kiddush Hashem: it happens through community.
As the Netziv writes, when our ancestors were farmers in the Land of Israel, most did not have the ability to pray with a minyan every day because they lived spread out. But on the Festivals, we all gathered together in Yerushalayim, and then we had the ability to truly sanctify G-d's holy name and also to pray with a minyan.
This comment by the Netziv is a poweful reminder of the importance of community, as it is the mechanism that allows to truly sanctify HaShem's name by joining together with our fellow Jews to keep his Torah.

Thank you to everyone who came or tuned in virtually to the joint CBAJ and Jewish Federation Tekes Ma'avar this past Wednesday to commemorate Yom HaZikaron and celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut.
While we exuberantly rejoice at Israel's 74th birthday this year, we also mourn the death of three Israelis who were murdered in terror attacks in Elad, Israel, on Yom Ha'Atzmaut: Boaz Gol, Yonatan Havakuk and Oren Ben Yiftah. May G-d comfort their families, especially the 16 children of these three men who are now bereft of their fathers. May G-d send a speedy recovery to all of those who were injured in these attacks and strenghten the hands of the defenders of Israel to bring the perpetrators of this horrific attack to justice.
Finally, a reminder that the Albany County Health Department's public health advisory to wear masks while indoors in public places, made in response to rising caseloads of COVID-19 in our county, remains in effect. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Ben Kean

On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a meaningful and restful Shabbat.
I hope to see you soon at tefilah, a youth program, or social event.
This past week and next week are important weeks for us as Jews who respond to modern history with a religious consciousness and with a strong sense of our Jewish identity. On this past Thursday, we commemorated Yom HaShoah, remembering the greatest tragedy of the modern era in which one third of our people were brutally murdered for who they were.
This coming Wednesday night, we will transition to marking Yom Ha'Atzmaut and Yom HaZikaron, celebrating the miracle that our people, still broken and bleeding from the blow of the Shoah, were able to create the modern State of Israel. In that spirit, I hope to see as many as possible - either in person or virtually - at CBAJ and the Jewish Federation's Tekes Ma'avar this Wednesday evening to commemorate Yom HaZikaron and celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut.
Finally, as I am sure that you already know, the Albany County Health Department put out a health advisory this week in response to rising caseloads of COVID-19 in our county. In light of this, I urge you to think carefully about what precautions are right for you and your family. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Ben Kean
